Escorted & Guided Tour Planning

The classic way to see the world — planned end to end, paced thoughtfully, with the right operator matched to how you travel.

Guided Tours – Explore the World With Confidence

An escorted tour is the most efficient way to cover a lot of ground without losing your weekends to logistics. The right tour does the planning, pacing, and on-the-ground problem-solving for you — what changes is which operator you book, how the days are paced, and how much room is left for things you want to do on your own. That’s the part I help with.

My  core escorted-tour partners include Globus, Cosmos, CIE Tours, Collette and Tauck — names that have built these itineraries for decades and that handle the small stuff well. Globus and Collette anchor the classic small-and-mid-group format. Tauck for travelers who want fewer people on the bus, better hotels, and more included experiences. CIE Tours is my first call for Ireland and the UK. I match the operator to the trip — not the other way around.

Where an Escorted Tour Earns Its Keep

Escorted tours work best when the destination is logistically demanding — long distances, multiple cities, language and visa friction — or when you want to cover a region in a single trip without spending your evenings replanning. The format handles transfers, hotels, the right local guide in each city, and admission to the sites that matter. You arrive at a hotel that’s already been vetted, the next morning’s bus is at the door, and the only decisions left are the ones worth making.

It’s also tends to be the right call for first visits to a region (England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Eastern Europe, Asia), for travelers who don’t want to drive in a foreign country, and for solo travelers who’d rather have built-in companionship than dinners alone. It’s not the right format for trips where you want to linger in two or three places — for those, I’ll usually recommend a custom itinerary instead.

When clients ask whether the group dynamic will dominate the trip, the honest answer is: it depends on the operator and group size. The premium small-group products (Tauck, Collette’s Explorations) cap groups at 18–24, with more free time and quieter hotels. The classic Globus and Cosmos groups run 30–44 and have a more brisk-and-broad cadence. I’ll tell you which one fits how you actually travel.

Where Guided Tours Work Especially Well

Ireland and the UK. CIE Tours and Globus have all built deep route knowledge here — castles, distilleries, smaller villages — and an escorted format is the cleanest way to see both islands in one trip without renting a car.

Italy and the rest of classic Europe. First trips to Italy almost always benefit from an escorted format — the four-city loop (Venice, Florence, Rome, plus the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como) is well-traveled territory, and the right operator removes the train-booking and language friction. For repeat travelers who already know the country, I’ll often recommend a custom itinerary instead.

Eastern and Central Europe. Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and Krakow are typical anchors. The logistics are heavier than Western Europe, and an escorted tour takes them off your plate.

Canada and the US national parks. Eastern Canada (Toronto, Niagara, Quebec, Montreal) and the Rockies (Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper) are the two most popular escorted itineraries in North America.  Also available for Alaska!

India, Egypt, and the Holy Land. These are the destinations where the format pays off the most — strong local guides matter, and the operators have negotiated access that’s hard to replicate independently.

Africa and Asia. For African safaris, I usually recommend a fully-custom small-group custom itinerary rather than a coach-style escorted tour — the format is different. For Japan, both formats work; we’ll talk through it.

Guided/Escorted Tours FAQs

What is a guided or escorted tour?

A guided (also called escorted) tour is a fully planned travel experience led by a professional Tour Director. It typically includes accommodations, transportation, select meals, sightseeing, and expert local guides. You’ll travel with a group of like-minded travelers and enjoy seamless logistics while gaining rich insights into each destination.

What is included in an escorted tour package?

Most escorted tours include:

  • Hotel accommodations

  • Transportation between destinations (luxury motorcoach, train, etc.)

  • Professional Tour Director throughout the trip

  • Expert local guides for key sights

  • Many meals (varies by itinerary)

  • Admission to major attractions

  • Luggage handling at hotels

I will review what’s included for your specific tour and recommend optional experiences you may wish to add.

How structured is a guided tour? Will I have free time?

Guided tours offer a great balance of structure and free time. Daily sightseeing is often included in the mornings, with some afternoons and evenings free to explore independently. Some guided tour companies offer unstructured days so you can have complete control over what to see or do.  I can help you plan optional excursions or personalized experiences to enhance your trip.

Will I have to pack and unpack often?

One of the biggest advantages of an escorted tour is convenience—you’ll stay in centrally located hotels, and luggage handling is provided. Many tours are designed so you only change hotels every few nights, minimizing packing and unpacking.

Are escorted tours suitable for solo travelers?

Yes — they’re often the best format for solo travel. You get built-in companionship without the obligation to spend every meal with the group, and a Tour Director who handles the on-the-ground logistics that are the most tedious part of solo planning. A handful of operators (notably Insight, Globus, and Collette during specific promotions) waive or reduce the single supplement on select departures. I keep an eye on those and will flag them when they line up with where you want to go.

What kind of group sizes can I expect?

Group size varies by tour and company. Many standard tours with companies like Globus or Collette average around 30–44 travelers for their classic groups. Some premium or small-group tours are capped at 24 travelers or fewer. I’ll help you choose the style that fits your comfort level.

Do I need to tip the Tour Director and local guides?

Gratuities for the Tour Director, driver, and local guides are customary but not always included in the tour price. I’ll provide you with tipping guidelines for your specific tour so you can plan accordingly.

Can you help me plan a pre- or post-tour extension?

Yes! I often create custom pre- and post-tour itineraries to help clients make the most of their travels. Whether you want to arrive early and adjust to time zones, explore additional cities, or enjoy a relaxing post-tour stay, I’ll handle all the arrangements.

Do you charge a planning fee for booking guided tours?

Yes — a nominal planning fee applies when I’m building or modifying an itinerary, which covers the time and the concierge-level support throughout your trip. If you’ve already settled on a specific tour and just need it booked as-is, the fee is typically waived; if you’re adding pre- or post-tour custom travel, it applies. We’ll cover this on our initial call so there are no surprises.

Why should I book an escorted tour through a travel advisor instead of direct?

Two reasons. First, the tour operator already builds an advisor commission into the published price — book direct, and they keep it; book through me, and you pay the same and get an advocate. Second, when something goes wrong on the ground (a delayed flight that breaks the connection to your tour, a hotel issue, a missed transfer), you have one phone number to call instead of an after-hours operator queue. The planning fee covers custom work; the booking itself comes at no extra cost to you.

What's the difference between Globus, Tauck, and Collette?

Globus runs the classic mid-size group format (30–44 travelers, well-priced, broad coverage). Collette sits in the same range with a slightly more inclusive style and the Explorations small-group product. Tauck is up-tier — fewer travelers (18–24 typical), better hotels, more included experiences, often the right call for a special-occasion trip. CIE Tours is the specialist for Ireland and the UK.

Are escorted tours a good fit for first-time international travelers?

They’re often the right introduction. The format absorbs the hardest parts of international travel — currency, transfers, language at hotel desks — so first-timers can focus on the destination instead of the logistics.

How far in advance should I book?

For premium small-group departures (Tauck and Collette Explorations) and for popular regions in peak season — eight to twelve months out is typical, often longer for the tour-and-cruise combinations. Classic Globus and Cosmos departures have more flexibility but the best cabin and room categories still go first.
