I recently had the opportunity to travel with Globus on their Historic Cities of Eastern Canada Tour. While I sell a lot of escorted tours in my travel business, this was my very first time personally traveling with Globus. What follows is a recap of my journey through some of Canada’s most fascinating cities, and why this experience left such an impression on me.
First, let’s talk about the heart of every guided tour—the tour host. Our host, Gladys, a native Canadian, was truly a gem. She had the warmth and charm of someone who could easily be everyone’s favorite aunt. Her deep knowledge of the destinations, combined with her genuine love for sharing her home country, made every moment feel special. A great tour host can make all the difference, and Gladys went above and beyond to ensure our journey was not only seamless but unforgettable.
Starting in Toronto
Our tour began in Toronto, where we stayed at the Westin Harbour Castle, a great base for exploring the city. Toronto is a diverse, energetic, and modern city with a rich history and a vibrant cultural scene. From the waterfront views to the mix of architecture, it’s the kind of city that surprises you with how much there is to do and see.
Niagara Falls – A Bucket List Moment
From Toronto, we continued on to Niagara Falls, spending a night near one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders. Visiting Niagara Falls has long been on my bucket list, and while my first glimpse left me slightly underwhelmed compared to the dramatic images you always see, that feeling didn’t last long.
The turning point was the boat ride that took us right up to the base of Horseshoe Falls. Feeling the mist and the sheer power of the rushing water up close was absolutely breathtaking. Later, from the viewing platforms above the falls, I finally experienced the awe I had been expecting.
We also had the chance to explore Niagara-on-the-Lake, a charming small town filled with boutique shops, wineries, and historic character. That evening, dinner at a tower overlooking the falls gave us yet another unforgettable perspective—this time illuminated against the night sky.
Ottawa – Canada’s Capital
Our next stop was Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, where we spent several nights. Ottawa blends stately government buildings with beautiful green spaces, and I found it fascinating to explore the heart of Canada’s political and cultural life. It’s a city that feels both historic and very much alive with modern Canadian identity.
Quebec City – Old World Charm in North America
From Ottawa, we moved on to Quebec City, and despite a rainy day for our main tour, this quickly became one of my favorite stops. With its cobblestone streets, fortified walls, and the grandeur of the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Quebec City feels like a slice of Europe in North America.
Even in the drizzle, the city’s old-world charm was undeniable. Strolling through the historic district, it was easy to see why Quebec City is considered one of the most picturesque cities on the continent.
Montreal – A Familiar City, Seen Anew
Our tour concluded in Montreal. Having been there before, I was curious to see how the Globus experience would differ from my prior visit. This time, I appreciated the city through a new lens, with a focus on its unique French-Canadian culture and thriving food scene. Montreal is a city that blends history and modernity beautifully, and it was the perfect place to wrap up the journey.
Reflections on Escorted Tours
I realize that escorted or guided motorcoach tours aren’t for everyone. Some travelers prefer to go completely independent. But for many—especially those exploring a destination for the first time, traveling solo, or simply wanting a stress-free way to see more in less time—these tours can be an excellent option.
This trip reminded me of why I recommend escorted tours so often. The planning is done for you, logistics are seamless, and you gain insights you might otherwise miss. I also met some wonderful fellow travelers, which added to the overall experience.
Why Work with a Travel Advisor for Escorted Tours?
Here’s something many people don’t realize: every escorted tour already includes a built-in commission in the cost, whether you book it directly or through a travel advisor. If you book directly with the tour company, they keep the commission—and you’re on your own to figure things out.
But when you book through a travel advisor, that commission supports a professional who:
- Does the legwork for you
- Serves as your advocate if something goes wrong
- Adds value by customizing your trip (extra days before or after, unique excursions, and more)
- Provides peace of mind throughout the planning process
In short, you get more support and personalization when you work with a travel advisor!
