Bonjour Bordeaux: River Cruising Through France’s Wine Country

by | Sep 22, 2025 | River Cruise

This past July, I had the incredible opportunity to join Avalon Waterways on a familization trip (FAM) to experience their brand-new itinerary, Bonjour Bordeaux: Châteaux, Wineries, and Charming Villages.

While this was a FAM trip and I received a discounted rate, my only obligation was to share my experience with you. Avalon and the Globus Family of Brands had no input or control over my blog or videos. What follows are my personal thoughts and reflections from this unique journey.

How This Cruise Stands Out

Unlike many traditional European river cruises, this itinerary offers a few special twists:

  • Embarkation and disembarkation both take place in Bordeaux, giving travelers the chance to fully immerse themselves in the region.  We spent 3 nights of the sailing in Bordeaux.  This does give you opportunity to enjoy more of the nightlife this city has to offer.
  • Sailing occurs only during the day. Local laws prohibit nighttime navigation due to the tidal changes caused by Bordeaux’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Short sailing distances. This allows for more time exploring destinations and less time spent on the water.

This cruise is also a wine lover’s dream, with each stop centered around the region’s deep wine heritage. From vineyard visits to tastings, you’ll experience Bordeaux through its most famous export.  Even at each evening meal we had red and white wines local to the port we visited that day.

Ports of Call and Highlights

Here’s a look at the destinations we explored along the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers:

  1. Bourg
One of our first excursions was to the stunning Château Sigalas Rabaud where we experienced our first wine tasting of the sailing.
  2. Pauillac (Médoc)
Our adventure began with a visit to Médoc, known for its exceptional wines. This stop included:

    1. Touring a historic fort
    2. Sampling fresh oysters and local wines
    3. Tasting savory macarons, a unique regional specialty
    4. We also got an opportunity to go cycling (on e-bikes) in the region and get up close to some magnificent chateaux and experience the beauty of many vineyards.
  3. Blaye
This charming town gave us a glimpse into local life. We met the only winemaking family in the region, visited their art gallery, and even toured the quaint apartments they rent out to visitors.
  4. Libourne & St. Émilion
St. Émilion quickly became one of my favorite stops of the entire trip. This picturesque town is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and incredible views. I loved it so much that I could easily see myself returning to spend more time here.
  5. Arcachon’s Bay
Another highlight of the cruise!Arcachon felt exactly like the French seaside town I had always imagined. We enjoyed a perfect day with lunch overlooking the ocean, strolling through outdoor markets, and soaking up the coastal charm.
  6. Bordeaux
Our journey wrapped up back in Bordeaux, a city rich in culture, history, and, of course, incredible wine.
  7. The Beauty of the Region

The Bordeaux region is simply breathtaking.  From lush vineyards and rolling hills to elegant châteaux and lively markets, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard. Each stop brought new flavors, sights, and stories to discover, making this a truly immersive experience.
